Dr LEE Boon Yang
Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts

      Lee Boon Yang , born on 1 October 1947, was educated at Montfort School in Singapore. He graduated as a veterinarian (B.V.Sc Hon 2A) from the University of Queensland, Australia.

He worked as a vet and R&D Officer at the Primary Production Department from 1972 to 1981. In 1981, he joined the regional office of the US Feed Grains Council. A year later, he joined the Primary Industries Enterprise Pte Ltd as Senior Manager.

Boon Yang first stood for election in the 1984 General Elections. Since then he had held the Jalan Besar parliamentary seat for six consecutive terms.

He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment and the Minister for Communications and Information in February 1985. In May 1985, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and the Minister for Home Affairs.

In 1986, Boon Yang was appointed Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and Home Affairs. In 1987, he relinquished his portfolio as Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and took on the appointment of Minister of State for National Development.

In 1988, he was appointed Senior Minister of State for National Development and Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs. He was also appointed the Government Whip.

In November 1990, Boon Yang was appointed Senior Minister of State for Defence in the Government led by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.

He was appointed Minister in the Prime Minister's Office on 1 July 1991, concurrently holding the post of Second Minister for Defence. He was reappointed to these posts after the September 1991 General Elections.

On 2 January 1992, Boon Yang relinquished his posts as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and took on the appointment of Minister for Labour, retaining his portfolio as Second Minister for Defence.

On 2 July 1994, he was appointed Minister for Defence while retaining his portfolio in Labour.

He relinquished his Defence portfolio on 1 August 1995.

After the 1997 General Elections, Boon Yang was re-appointed as Minister for Labour on 25 January 1997. From 1 April 1998, he served as Minister for Manpower when the Labour Ministry was changed to Ministry of Manpower.

He was returned as Member of Parliament for the Jalan Besar Group Representation Constituency  (GRC) in the 2001 General Elections and was re-appointed as Minister for Manpower.

On 12 May 2003, he relinquished the Manpower portfolio to serve as the Minster for Information, Communications and the Arts.

On 12 Aug 2004, Boon Yang was re-appointed as the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

In May 2006, Boon Yang was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for the Jalan Besar GRC.  He was also re-appointed as Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts.

He is married to Yap Mee Mee. They have a daughter.

He plays golf. He also enjoys music, opera and ballet.
